We are all fond of bargains, and paying less for a given product or service and travel health insurance is not an exception. But one thing never to forget is that cheap can often get more expensive and savings are not always reasonable especially when health and life are concerned.

So be careful when you select a cheap travel health insurance plan. If the plan does not cover what happens when you are traveling, then you might regret your stinginess. Youd better find other ways to cut costs than by reducing the number of risks covered.

One way to get travel health insurance cheaper is by purchasing a multi-trip travel health insurance plan. This is applicable in the cases when you travel frequently. Another alternative for frequent travelers is purchasing annual plans or choosing a new plan that has the option of renewing it at a discount.

Another way to save money is to buy travel health insurance for a particular country only. There are companies that offer such plans, though most of the offers on the market are for any country outside the US.

If you travel with your family, then a family plan is the best option in terms of money. The same applies to group plans, if you are traveling as part of a group.

A riskier alternative is to select a plan in which not all medical expenses are covered by the insurer but you are a co-payer. In general these plans are cheaper, but there is less security for you.

How much you will save from choosing a cheaper travel health insurance plan is up to you. There are many online insurers that provide a calculator to check which of their plans are applicable for you, but never forget that cheaper is not always better. It is a bargain only if you pay less money for the same risks!

Cheap Health Insurance Plan – A Simple Way To Save Money

Is there such a thing as cheap health insurance? It hardly seems possible when you look at the rise in hospital costs and physician services. Insurance companies have the task of underwriting the medical risk for insurance. The insurer then issues and delivers the policy to the insured once they are accepted into the plan. The policyholders then receive the policy declaration pages that list all of the benefits and features.

What are those benefits and features? How do they work after a hospital stay? When you begin to find the answers to those questions then you begin to understand what makes up the total premium. When you receive your first benefit statement after a hospital stay then you will begin to understand how the deductible is applied and how the coinsurance works.

Simple claims analysis

1. Total inpatient expense for 4 days in the hospital including physician services amounts to $4000.

2. Your policy has a $500 deductible with an 80/20 coinsurance clause with a maximum out of pocket $2000.

3. You must pay the first $500 for your stay leaving a balance of $3500.

4. You will pay 20% of that $3500 or $700 and the insurance company will pay $2800.

When your 20% reaches $2000 then the insurance company pays 100% of the remaining costs up to a million dollars (or 2 million etc).

The health insurance buying trends indicate that people are purchasing health insurance with higher deductibles. Deductibles bring down the premium dramatically. There are some plans with deductibles as high as $5000. This is called self-insuring because in essence that is what you are doing for the deductible amount.

Health Savings Accounts are also starting to become very popular. These savings accounts are tax deductible. They are like medical IRAS. Contact your tax advisor or accountant for more details.

Please see our recommended source for insurance quotes. We have done the research so you don’t have to.

Catastrophic Health Insurance Coverage

A catastrophic or major medical insurance plan is a deductible and comparatively cheaper form of health insurance with an element of speculation to it. A deductible is the amount you pay out of your pocket for medical expenses before the insurer pays the balance. For instance, if your deductible is $5,000 and the hospital bill is $12,000, the insurance company will pay only $7,000. The general rule is the higher the deductible, the lower the premium. When you opt for this plan, you’re gambling that you will not face major medical problems in the near future.

It is a calculated risk. According to one survey, the annual medical expenses of 90% of the U.S. population are less than $2000; for 73%of the population, it is below $500.

Two groups that normally opt for catastrophic health insurance are young people in their twenties who are confident of their health condition, and older men between fifty and sixty-five who are still waiting for Medicare eligibility.

Catastrophic health insurance coverage is only meant to protect against major hospital charges and not routine medical expenses. It normally does not cover maternity care, doctors visits and prescription drugs. Certain pre-existing medical conditions and cases involving mental health and substance abuse are usually excluded from the coverage. A catastrophic health insurance policy can be purchased as an individual plan or as part of a group plan. In fact, there appears to be a trend among employers to encourage employees to opt for this type of medical cover. The maximum lifetime limit could be as high as $3 million.

Rates vary according to where you live and your age. In certain states, the saving on premiums could be two-thirds. For example, a 21 year old, non-smoking female may pay as little as $30 per month as a premium.

It is advisable to seek professional guidance from insurance companies and/or agents and compare quotes before making a decision.

Canadian Travel Health Insurance

With Canada so close to the US, it is easy to forget that Canada is another country and even though we feel at home when we go there, there are formalities one must have in mind like having a travel health insurance because the American healthcare system does not pay for treatment outside the US.

There is hardly anything special in purchasing a travel health insurance plan when going to Canada that is very different from doing it for any other part of the world. Maybe one difference is that Canada has a high standard of living and therefore you can reasonably expect that there, like at home, medical and dental services will be more expensive than those in some Third World countries. And this is one more reason to look for the best, not the cheapest travel health insurance plan.

As far as money is concerned, a regular basic plan usually provides coverage for you and your family amounting about $50,000 CAD (about USD 43,000), which is usually enough to cover ambulance service, laboratory examination, doctors fees, a short stay in the hospital, etc. But if you are afraid that this is not enough, there are companies that offer over USD 1,000,000 as coverage. And if you go to ski in Calgary, for example, or go on a fishing trip to Ontario, do not let a broken limb ($400-500 with therapy, crutches, etc.) break both your mood and finances.

There are many Canadian companies that offer travel health insurance to Americans and there are many American companies that offer the same for Americans going to Canada, so the choice is unlimited. Just visit their sites and spend some time with the online calculators that allow to enter your age, the duration of the trip, the destination province and your medical condition, and in no time at all you will have plenty of offers to choose from!

Can You Afford To Have Health Insurance?

You may think that the best way to acquire health insurance coverage, is simply to obtain the complete coverage that you can afford. Off course to some extent it is true, and if you have many liquid resources then it is a good idea to obtain a good complete individual health insurance plan that includes everything from a small fees for hospital visits to full dental coverage. But, if you are not good budget, you may consider getting a smaller policy that you can afford and pay for some of medical expenses from you regular budget.

If you are trying several other methods that are costly to fill and refill, or that need regular check ups with your medical adviser or doctor to make sure that you have the right cure, it is important to obtain a complete health plan. However, if you are searching for other ways to meet your health costs, it may make sense not to get such plan. If you do not have any dependents and do not need to make regular hospital visits for any reason, consider whether you really need a full health insurance plan that gives you complete coverage. Paying more cost than your requirements for health insurance can be a heavy burden, so it is good to think creatively and realistically about what you really require and if it is possible to get the care you require without a large monthly payment to a health insurance providers.

Many people know that using a combination of free clinics and lower health insurance coverage, they are able to get by much less money that they would pay for comprehensive health insurance. It is a cool idea to have coverage that can help alleviating the burden if you suddenly develop a condition that requires urgent care. However, it is a good idea to look for different kinds of plans that are available, as one of the most plans designed specially to give you emergency coverage may be a much better way than a plan that will leave you generally well insured.

It is not a good way to apply different trick with your health care, so make this sure that you if do not opted for the maximum amount of insurance that you can afford, then you have a plan for how to meet any medical cost that may arise in future. Think about other possibilities that you can use to get money for your health care needs, such as starting an investment savings account where you store away the money you would be paying for insurance every month. This will help you to get prepared for anything. Dont forget coverage entirely though.

Can You Afford Not To Have Health Insurance?

Many people think the best way to get health insurance coverage is simply to get the most complete coverage one can afford. This is, to some extent true, and if you have a lot of liquid resources it is a good idea to get a comprehensive individual health insurance plan that includes everything from a small deductible for hospital visits to full dental and vision coverage. However, if you are on a very tight budget, you may want to consider getting a smaller plan than you can afford and paying for some of your medical expenses out of pocket.

If you are juggling several different prescriptions that are costly to fill and refill, or that require frequent check ups with your doctor to make sure that you have the right dosage, it is important to get a full health plan. However, if you are looking for ways to economize on your health costs, it may make sense not to get such a comprehensive plan. If you dont have any dependents and dont need to make regular hospital visits for any reason, consider whether you really need a full health insurance plan that gives you complete coverage. Paying more than you need for health insurance can be a heavy financial burden, so it is worth thinking creatively and realistically about what you really need and if it is possible to get the care you require without shelling out a large monthly payment to a health insurance provider.

Many people find that through a combination of free clinics and minimal health insurance coverage, they are able to get by spending much less money than they would pay for comprehensive health insurance. It is still a smart idea to have coverage that will help alleviate the financial burden if you suddenly develop a condition or meet with an injury that requires emergency care. However, it is a good idea to look into what kinds of plans are available, as one of the many plans designed specifically to give you emergency coverage may be a much better choice than a plan that will leave you generally well insured.

It is never a good idea to gamble with your health care, so make sure that you if dont opt for the maximum amount of insurance that you can afford, that you have a plan for how to meet any medical expenses that may arise. Think about other ways that you can designate money for your health care needs, such as starting a savings account where you store away the money you would be paying for insurance every month. This will help you make sure that you are prepared for anything. Dont forgo coverage entirely though. At the very least purchase a high deductible plan that will cover you in the case of a serious illness or injury. Otherwise one serious illness or injury could wipe you out financially.

California strengthen health reforms

While Massachusetts previous year became the first state wanting each one to purchase health insurance, the proposals in California could come up with an even bolder trial, because the Golden State’s problems are so much larger. “It’s now a bigger face in California,” says Marian Mulkey, a senior program officer at California HealthCare Foundation, a non-profit organization think tank. “That’s not to say it’s insurmountable.”

California health insurance, for example, a predictable 4.9 million people are short of health insurance. That compares with a forecast 500,000 in Massachusetts before its plan began. That’s why politicians from other states along with policy specialists and officials in Congress are watching the California try closely, with its latent to set a nationwide model. Some desire a worldwide program paid for and overseen completely by the government. Some states all individuals must be obligatory to purchase health coverage, while others say such a go-ahead is draconian when premium costs are so high.

Health insurance in California hit a barrier surprises few. The challenge is huge and the solutions are contentious, splitting lawmakers. Republicans devastatingly do not support the two Democratic health-improvement measures, which are in play in California, nor did any back the governor’s plan. While their suggestion shares some of the governor’s ideas, Democrats part with Schwarzenegger in two important ways: They do not desire to need individuals to purchase health insurance, and they wish employers who do not provide insurance to pay more than the governor proposes.

“Any development in California would make a considerable dent in the problem of the uninsured nationally,” says Larry Levitt, a health insurance policy forecaster for the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit study group based in Menlo Park, Calif. “Action in California would make genuine momentum, both in the presidential debate and in other states.”

In Massachusetts, years of preparation went into the health-reform attempt before the government overpoweringly in agreement passed its measure. “If you are going to refinance one-sixth of the world economy, you would better not do it on a 50-to-49 vote,” says Jon Kings dale, head of the state agency overseeing rollout of the program in Massachusetts. “Enacting something is only semi the challenge.”

Buyer Beware: Identifying Health Insurance Fraud

Scam insurance is not new – criminals have been selling fraudulent policies since health insurance came into being. But with today’s skyrocketing health care costs, more consumers are seeking affordable access to quality care, which provides scam artists with fertile hunting grounds.

By appealing to consumers’ insurance cost concerns, these individuals successfully entice more than 100,000 Americans into purchasing sham health insurance every year.

Consumers should always be on the lookout for common insurance scams. Some warning signs of fraudulent plans include:

* dramatically low premiums;

* guaranteed coverage – regardless of pre-existing conditions;

* lack of the word “insurance” anywhere in the materials;

* plans that ask for premium payments in cash or for an entire year up-front.

It is important to evaluate the agent selling the plan. Agents who claim that they do not need a license to sell insurance or imply that their product is exempt from state regulation should be rejected. Consumers should be wary of any agent claiming to represent a medical provider who solicits customers door-to-door or patrols neighborhoods encouraging residents to visit a mobile clinic for routine checkups or tests.

Many organizations, including the National Association of Health Underwriters, are educating their members and consumers about how to recognize insurance scams and protect against them.

To keep from being victimized, consumers need to do their research and use a reputable insurance agent or broker who is knowledgeable about scam insurance. Consumers can locate a local NAHU member to help them find the right health insurance plan by going to www.nahu.org and using the “Find an Agent” feature.

Suspected insurance scams should be reported as soon as possible. Most states sponsor fraud bureaus that investigate insurance scams, and some even reward whistleblowers if there is a conviction.

The financial effects of these schemes are felt throughout the entire health care industry. Victims of insurance fraud will have to repay uncovered medical bills and depending on how long they go without legitimate insurance coverage, may also lose health care insurance access permanently. Health care facilities and medical professionals, meanwhile, may never be paid for the treatments they administer.

The only way to stop the spread of insurance scams is to learn how to detect fraud and work to prevent such criminals from succeeding.
